Xiaomi 12S Ultra will have 1-inch Sony IMX989 camera sensor

A

Feel a bit sorry for original users of the Xiaomi 11 ultra in China. Many have reported that the camera performance has degraded with recent updates on the Chinese software. This is probably due to the new model as most big Chinese reviewers who get millions of views will compare this new model to the Xiaomi 11 ultra and Xiaomi want it to look better than the Xiaomi 11 ultra. In reality the image quality on the mi 11 ultra was already very good (before the negative optimism). The new model is unlikely to offer much improvement and may be actually worse on launch as it is a new sensor which will take time to optimise. That may be the reason why Xiaomi is negatively optimising the Xiaomi 11 ultra. They aren’t the only brand to do this in China unfortunately. Interestingly they announced that they haven’t sent this to dxomark like they normally do (or else they did send it but it didn’t take the top position so they don’t want to release the score).

They are crazy .. nobody even using camera on phone so much to be soo so soo mega brilliant what’s de point ?? 🤷‍♂️

“Xiaomi advertised the new IMX989 to be 1” from one corner to another but this is misleading information – it is a 1-inch type, similar to the Xperia Pro-I camera sensor. An actual platform with a diagonal of 1 inch / 2.54 cm would require a tremendously big lens, making the camera island bigger than any other competitor’s.

Of course, Xiaomi might decide to go that way in the end. The Mi 11 Ultra is also heavy and anything but thin in the camera area. We’ll know for sure once the device is next week. “

So you’re not sure how they’re doing it, but you’re still saying it’s misleading. Terrible journalism.

vrvly, 2 hours agoWish Sony made the biggest sensor, the best lens, best in all field of view in their xperias. … moreRegardless of how well Sony makes a camera system that behaves exactly like an actual camera would, for as long as you keep on believing that artificially-enhanced photos and the thinking that brighter and more saturated = better image quality, then sad to say but you shouldn’t have to expect anything anymore.

They have two ways to approach this if they want to cover 90% + of the sensor area:
1. Go with ultra wide field of view like Sharp did (19mm eqv)
2. Go with very thick phone in order to protrude the lenses. 11U is laready the thickest phone out there

There might be some other way as well, like probably using crap lenses or trying to mitigate layers into a single piece.

The initial rumors were that the 12S would be a big phone. Glad to see that’s just the ultra.

In the initial publications they didn’t even mention the phone was capturing images with its full sensor size, just advertised it as the first 1” sensor phone. How times change. 🙂

Gandalf, 2 hours agoMany phone companies used 1 “sensor, but they don’t use the whole sensor, just a sma … moreVery few companies have done this. Only Sharp and Sony have used a 1 inch type on a modern smartphone, Sharp probably crops, I don’t have enough information, the new R7 might use the entirety and Sony crops to about 60% of it. Xiaomi will most likely use the entirety, but that remains to be seen.

Well xiaomi is pretty impresive but they are only a second.
When comes to phone camera on flagship grade devices Huawei is the best friend and brand xiaomi is second.
Third place as usual is a fight between Samsung, Apple and Sony since LG is gone from phone industry.
